Compress an iPhone MOV video

Add an iPhone or QuickTime MOV and get a smaller MP4 that plays almost everywhere.

or drop or paste it here

Target: Discord (free), 20 MB. You can change it after adding a video. Your video stays on your device.

How it works

  1. Add the MOV file from your iPhone or Mac.
  2. Pick a preset or type the size you need.
  3. Press Compress. A portrait video stays in portrait.
  4. Download the MP4.

Why iPhone videos are so big

An iPhone records at a very high bitrate, often with HEVC, so one minute can take hundreds of megabytes. Most of that detail is invisible on a phone screen, which is why a large MOV can shrink a lot with little visible change.

Browsers that can decode HEVC read the file directly. For others, the tool switches to slower mode and tells you.

Privacy tags are removed

A MOV from a phone can carry the place where it was filmed, the phone model and the time it was created. The compressed MP4 does not carry those tags, so you can share it without sharing them.

The picture is turned the right way up for good, so a portrait video stays portrait in every app.

Questions

Can I compress a MOV from my iPhone in the browser?

Yes, in Safari or any current browser. The video stays on your phone or computer, and the result is a smaller MP4.

Why is the result an MP4 and not a MOV?

MP4 with H.264 and AAC plays in more places than MOV. It also works in Discord, WhatsApp and email.

Will my location be shared in the compressed file?

No. Location, device and creation-time tags from the original are not copied to the result.

What if my browser cannot decode HEVC?

The tool uses slower mode, which has its own decoder. It shows a time estimate before it starts.
