Compress an MP4 to a target size
Add an MP4, choose a size, and get a new MP4 that is no bigger than the target.
This browser cannot compress video here
Target: Discord (free), 20 MB. You can change it after adding a video. Your video stays on your device.
How it works
- Add your MP4 file.
- Pick a preset or type the size you need.
- Press Compress and wait for the result.
- Download the new MP4.
What happens to an MP4
An MP4 is a container, and the video inside can use different codecs. The tool decodes the video with your browser, shrinks it, and writes a new MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, so the result also plays on older devices.
Your original file is not changed. The new file is created in memory and offered as a download.
MP4 files the browser cannot read
Some MP4 files use a codec your browser cannot decode, for example certain 10-bit or HEVC files. The tool then switches to slower mode, which reads them with a built-in decoder and says so before it starts.
Questions
Does compressing an MP4 lose quality?
Yes, a little. Making a file smaller means fewer bits per frame. The tool chooses the resolution and bitrate that give the cleanest result for the size you asked for.
Can I compress an MP4 without re-encoding?
No. A smaller size needs a new encode. Copying the streams would leave the size unchanged.
Why is the output named with the size?
The name is the original name plus the target, such as holiday-20mb.mp4, so it is easy to tell from the original.
Are MP4 files with several audio tracks supported?
The tool keeps the first video track and the first audio track, and leaves the others out.
