What fits in 25 MB
Twenty-five megabytes holds about 2 minutes at 720p, with room to spare at 480p.
The table uses the rule Auto resolution follows: at least 0.05 bits per pixel at 30 frames per second, plus 96 kbps stereo audio. Busy footage such as sport or water needs more bits than a talking head, so treat the times as a guide.
| Resolution | Longest clip |
|---|---|
| 1080p (1920×1080) | 57 seconds |
| 720p (1280×720) | about 2 minutes |
| 480p (854×480) | about 4 minutes |
Message limit, not attachment limit
Gmail lets a message be 25 MB in total. Because email encoding adds about 37% to attachments, the largest video you can attach is about 18 MB. That is why the Email: Gmail preset is 18 MB and not 25.
A 25 MB target is for places that count the file itself, such as upload forms, shared drives and apps with a 25 MB cap. For email, use the Gmail preset.
Questions
Can I attach a 25 MB video in Gmail?
Usually not. The 25 MB limit applies to the whole encoded message, which is about 37% larger than the file. Use the Email: Gmail preset at 18 MB instead.
Where is a 25 MB file useful?
Upload forms, school or work portals and apps with a 25 MB cap. Check the exact rule where you are uploading.
Does a bigger target always look better?
Up to a point. The tool never goes above the original resolution or its average bitrate, so a small source will not grow just to fill 25 MB.
Is the compressed file in a common format?
Yes. It is an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, which plays on nearly every device.
