Compress a video to 8 MB

The target starts at 8 MB, and you can change it to anything from 0.1 to 4000 MB.

or drop or paste it here

Target: 8 MB. You can change it after adding a video. Your video stays on your device.

How it works

  1. Add your video.
  2. Check that the custom size reads 8 MB.
  3. Press Compress. Short clips keep the most detail at this size.
  4. Download the MP4.

What fits in 8 MB

Eight megabytes is small. It holds a short clip at a sensible resolution, or a longer one at a lower resolution.

The table uses the rule Auto resolution follows: at least 0.05 bits per pixel at 30 frames per second, plus 96 kbps stereo audio. Busy footage such as sport or water needs more bits than a talking head, so treat the times as a guide.

Why 8 MB still comes up

Eight megabytes is a former Discord upload limit, and many guides, forum posts and saved bookmarks still quote it. If a site or app tells you its limit is 8 MB, this page starts at that number.

Discord itself now allows more for free accounts, so check the current limit before you squeeze a video this small.

Questions

How long a video fits in 8 MB?

At 480p it holds 83 seconds, at 720p 40 seconds and at 1080p 18 seconds. Removing the audio gives a little more room.

Will an 8 MB video look blurry?

A short clip at 480p or 720p looks fine on a phone. A long clip at 8 MB needs a low resolution, and fast motion will show blocks.

What happens if 8 MB is not enough for my video?

The tool tells you the smallest useful size for your clip and offers to use it. If you try anyway and the result is still over, no download is offered.

Can I pick 7.5 MB or 8.5 MB instead?

Yes. The size field takes decimals, from 0.1 to 4000 MB.
